We are a capitalist society (thank God) and these things are often stolen property. It is the same as if I came to your house, stole things from it, and then took them to a big clearinghouse where we all "just shared the love, man."

Put yourself in the artists' place. What if you sweat and toiled over a novel, only to have it stolen and given away for free? There goes your ticket out of the cubicle forest.

Or if you wrote a great piece of software, but before you could market it, somebody copied it and turned it into "freeware."

Sure, the "big, bad" ( ) record companies probably have the most to gain or lose, but when they lose, it gets passed on to the artist.

First of all Artist do not make much off of album sales. They make there money off of concerts and the like. So when people download a song and like, they might go to the concert, so it can be useful to the artist. The problem is the cost of CD's hasn't come down. And the answer is not Apple's music downloading idea. I am not gonna pay 99 cents per song. If I did that I'd have to pay nearly $3,000. I think the real problem here is the inflexibility if the music industry. They want it there way or no way. All the people who run the industry just want the money. They don't see that music is more then just a way of making money.

This is kinda off subject but your post reminds of the post office wanting ot charge for the use of email in general becuase they are losing money becuase of the internet.

I just think thier losing money on the entire deal and thier not happy about it so thier goign to throw a fit like a little kid would and get media exposure as well in the process. Everyone just about to an extent breaks the copyrights laws from time to time. I sure have, but I dotn see it as I went inot the store and stuck the cd in my pocket either.

Are you sure that wasn't just an email scam? You know, one of those that people send out just to freak out dumb people?

1. Who are you talking to?

2. PO doesn't own the mail. The artist owns their music, no matter how bad it sucks.

3. For the rest of you: Stop buying crappy CD's. That's how you send the message.

4. I agree that the music industry needs some consumer-focused reform. The internet is a great medium. Theft is still not the answer. Do people do it? Did I record tapes from other people's CD's back in college? Yup. But I didn't shake my fist at "the man" either and blame him for my transgression. If you know what you're doing, own up.

5. I'm not Pro RIAA, either, and I'm all for free markets. Should they get in the game? I wish they wouldn't. I wish artists would have more control, not less.

I suspect most of the software they are looking to build to delete files will be Windows based.

Those measures will be fairly ineffective with an O/S that is running a secure file system.

I don't even have Kazaa, but I do think there are linux and perhaps even Solaris ports of the software.

If so, run it as a non-root, non-privledged user and all they can destroy are the files of that one user. No big deal.

My issue is not one of having my computer destroyed, it's the invasion of privacy. I hate the RIAA because they harp on stupid sh!t and try to make RIAA so much more important than anything else. They even wanted to tack on an amendment to the Terrorist act that would have alowed the government and others like the RIAA to spy(hack really) on peoples computers because they consider music pirecy(sp?) as bad as 9/11. That's a who bunch of crap and to compair the two just shows how much these people don't care about the music, the people, or anything other then money. And they are will to do anything to make it and keep every penny.

Just found something. Read this page. It has links to reports about what congress wants to do about music downloading, and how some artist have proven that free music downloading does not hurt sales.
