apparently they (the music industry) is tired of all the illegal cd's burned and are going to start to go after people. it's weird though, b/c how can they prove that you burned the cd from a place like Kazaa? i have it on at work and i just listen to the songs, i don't burn them (at least not here anyways ) then what about people who record songs off the radio, they should get them too right? are we talking about the same thing

Yup they are crazy enuff to do it! The question is an issue of who has deeper pockets. You or them? So do they have the money and resourses to go and sue individuals? It is the RIAA, they do! Ask the guy that started his own system on a college campus. Not hardly a KaZaa or Morpheus but he gets a wonderful lawsuit in excess of from what I remember $250,000. It sucks! It will be interesting to see how they plan on policing everyone...but like I said, it is the RIAA. The lawsuits will start rolling out in August....But gives them time to start watching who is the biggest down to who is the smallest people who share.

yeah the paper said that they will focus on the people who have the most songs or downloads and then start on the people with just a little. they said they're trying to give us enough of a warnig. it also stated they will sue the people who's account it is or under shall i say, it doesn't matter if you're a minor or not something about we know what we are doing as far as copyright issues.

We are a capitalist society (thank God) and these things are often stolen property. It is the same as if I came to your house, stole things from it, and then took them to a big clearinghouse where we all "just shared the love, man."
Put yourself in the artists' place. What if you sweat and toiled over a novel, only to have it stolen and given away for free? There goes your ticket out of the cubicle forest.
Or if you wrote a great piece of software, but before you could market it, somebody copied it and turned it into "freeware."
Sure, the "big, bad" ( ) record companies probably have the most to gain or lose, but when they lose, it gets passed on to the artist.

Yea, I can understand how some artisit can see there music as art,and how Kazaa may be taking away the artists right to distribute his music, but the majority are just in it for the money.....Also what are they going to have to go after next, people recording the super bowl, World Series, how about VHS tapes or DVD's, Or if people what to burn Software, See they can't just single one medium out, our people can cry fowl...will it work though is a different question....See i personaly only use Kazza to get hard to find music and live shiot you cant find any where else.
And this shoudl eb in the off topic forum..lol

You are allowed under copywrite law to make a copy of a transmission for your private use. You are also allowed to make a tape copy of a music CD that you have purchased, but again, only for your own private use. (say, if you can play CD's in your house, but not in your car or boombox.)
You are not allowed to make a thousand hi-fi copies of your CD and pass them out to your friends, which is only a drop in the bucket compared to these "shared folder" deals.

Vive l'America!
Even if "artistically" vapid, it is still the artist's right (unless expressly waived) to maintain control over their intellectual as well as physical property.

All perfectly legal, with caveats. See my previous post.

Or if people what to burn Software,
Again, legal under some circumstances. (as a backup, for your own use, as long as you have purchased the actual software)

They're not singling out one medium. They're finally getting to this train wreck. The others have been pursued for a long time now, and so don't make a big news story.
And just who are these socialist free-lovers you refer to as "our people?"

See i personaly only use Kazza to get hard to find music and live shiot you cant find any where else.
Which is fine as long as the artist has granted permission. Many new artists are getting exposure on the internet that they would never have gotten via the traditional "record company" methods.
