My $.02-- she's right. The bills don't stop for the month. Tuition, insurance, future funds, clothes, those don't stop for the month. Maybe food and "I want", but the dad sounds like he is very intent on the money situation and not the quality time with his kid. She probably spends way more on her son than she gets a month, so he should just suck it up and get used to the idea that kids cost money.
I also agree to stay out of it. If not, you become the scapegoat when things get tough. Good luck!
