...and remember that pulling straight back on the center shifter cable should net you 3rd gear which is just enough to get you home in a pinch (twice!) 
Very important! You might as well replace the clip (Ford calls it a bearing; search for part number) that holds the plastic centering-spring et al assembly on the shaft with one from the dealer, or use an "E" clip. Most any hardware shop worth their salt will know what an E-clip is and can size one for you with the leather shifter cover removed and said metal shaft exposed.
