I had the same thing happen to me this weekend when I installed my first sub/amp. It ended up being that I picked a bad location for the ground and the amp was not getting full power. I regrounded to the right taillight screw that is hidden behind the carpet and now it is much louder. I am not sure if that is even the best place for the ground. Try taking a volt meter and see exactly how much you are getting and select a new location if it is low. Hope that helps
