I just replaced the lower speedometer cable for the second time in nearly two years. The first time the cable bit the dust the dealer replaced it along w/ the VSS (it also would not shift out of 1st). Last week the speedometer stopped working but the car shifted normally. I got a new cable from Ford and put it in myself. Has anyone else had repeat problems w/ the cable? Why did the VSS go bad the first time when the cable severed and not this time? I made sure the cable routing did not have any severe bends and even lubricated the top connection. I hope I do not not have to replace the cable every 2 years. The car has only 36k miles. The first occurence it had only 18k on it. Anybody out there w/ similar experiences or insight/suggestions I would love to hear from you.

Not sure... but you probably didn't get any responses because cable driven 95's are fairly rare. They switch to electronic speedo some time mid 95 so there isn't even a full model year to draw info from.

Still one out there. I'm at about 90k and the original owner. I had the speedo cable replaced about 3 or 4 times while it was under warranty to about 30k or so. It would occasionally wiggle around and then go back to normal. I've just gotten sort of used to it and it still does it once in a while.

Here's a question. We have a 95 MTX Zetec with a cable operated Speedo. Anyway, there's a terrible rattling sometimes when you come to a light. Terry and I thought it might have been the clutch disk springs, but after changing the clutch, the sound is still there. I am suspecting the Speedo cable. Has anyone ever heard of this?

My speedo usually wobbles around 20-45MPH... I've learned to ignore it because whenever I see a radar unit on the side of the street which displays your (the drivers) speed, my speedo is right on the displayed speed... not inaccurate, just wobbly often. Should I replace the cable or just let it do its thing? BTW, my Mystique was manufactured sometime in July 1994 and has a little over 60k miles on it

When yu are stopped, the speedo cable isn't turning. Might be gear rollover - the tranny spinning a little at stop and the gears make a little rattle.

140 K miles on the same cable. A little wobble, but no problems with the upper or lower part so far.

Man that just sorta made my day. I gots a 95 and I was kinda disappointed that I couldn't get the indiglo guages because I had a cable. Now you say that not all 95's are cable driven. My speedo nor tach doesn't shake or anything weird. So does this mean I have a digital? What other means can I use to tell if I have a cable/digital speedo/tach?

Look at the vss unit (on the back of the tranny, bottom of the firewall, down low). If you have only electrical wires coming out of it, you have an electronic speedometer. If you have a somewhat rigid cable, about the diameter of a pencil, coming out of the vss, and going up and through the firewall, you have a cable speedometer.
