What's the problem with mids/highs coming from the rear?
In an ideal world, we'd all have Dolby Digital, DTS, or some sort of surround processing system in our cars. But, such systems are far and few between and expensive. The typical car stereo only produces a stereo signal (Right & Left) which should be placed in front of the listening position as was intended in the recording.
Placing speakers behind you draws the image back. It no longer seems like the band is playing a set on your hood, but they're now jumbled up inside the car with little to no coherence between the speakers and music.
Some people prefer the latter as they have heard little else and it sounds familiar. A SQ competition stereo would definately sound different to the casual listener as it might appear a bit "distant" with everything coming from in front of the listening position.
