The footwell area in these cars does seem to get noticeably warm in the Summer. With a/c off, I find it best to simply have the controls set to floor with fan on 2nd lowest speed at all times. Temp setting on coldest, of course.
Could be poor shielding/insulation of firewall letting heat from engine/cat in or from heater core (engine coolant flows through core regardless of control settings).
