Hey guys... tore apart a set of 3L cams this weekend via an angle grinder and a 3 pound sledge hammer. Not easy work... The easiest way I can see to do it in such a way that you'd want to keep the cams would be to first drill the center of the expand plug out to relieve tension, then press the cam gear off of the cam tube. The end "button" is just sort of along for the ride. Once the center is drilled out, it should just fall off pretty much. I've got three more tries before I'm out of cams. I should have pics up Wednesday morning so that you guys can see what you'll be getting into. I knew I kept those old cams for somethin!!!!:D

What type of money will these be worth to people? I'm trying to get an idea of what price we need to stay under so that if we can get them made people can A) afford them B) buy them and C) I can pay my machine shop what they think they need. Looks like this would have to be on a exchange basis, would work really well with a nice set of P&P heads and 3L valves that they also do Let me know I'm heading there tonight.

Yeah good job on ripping apart that 3L cam This is starting to sound a little easier now that the cam gear can come off fairly easy. I bet the "hardest" part of this whole thing is to determine how much the cam gears will need to move for optimum performance......yes? No guesstimtion here

The big question is timing the cams with the engine in the car!!!
Removing them is cake compared to that.

Getting the cams swapped out in the car is just about difficult enough to just go ahead and pull the engine out. I doubt there will be many to do it in car like the Zetec. Belts vs. chains and we pay the price...
The pics I have were taken this morning, just didn't have time to download since I'm working a second shift this week at work and I'm not adjusting well... need sleepy... Anyway, I should have the pics loaded in the AM. From what I can see, you will need to mark the cam sprocket with a black marker or paint marker in the three spots to know where straight up is at... somewhat... then, drill out the center expansion plug, the use a press to pull the gear off. The machine shop can build you a plate and drill the holes for the gear to line up with them. Weld the plate back on with a bit of reference to the marker/paint marks and you're done.
For those worried that the welding process would ruin the heat treating... I doubt it... After grinding the gear button to red hot with my angle grinder for 20 minutes, the cam itself was still cool enough to hold in my bare hands to release it from the vice. Since the tube never got hot enough to burn my hands, I doubt the cam lobes or bearing surfaces will loose their temper. Stick most of the cam in a bucket of water, or lay a drenched rag on it while welding the adjuster plate on and you'll be fine.
