Looks like you could just take a good cutting saw and cut the sprocket off right behind it. There is room between it and the bearing surface. The thickness of the saw blade would be compensated for by the backing plate.
Yep, it looks pretty easy now. Just having a good cutting saw (diamond bladed lab saw would be nice!) and some decent fabrication. I'd definitely be interested in building another N/A motor if I could have these on it.

I keep on thinking I could build the ultimate high compression 3L the second time around. Oh the dreams, and the money.

You and I both Tom... So, should I expect you to be bidding against me on every blown motor early model SE I find on Ebay?

BTW, use the saw on the front side of the cam, not the back. Then all you have to do is pull the gear off (easier since the button is cut off), machine and attach the backing plates, then reattach the gear.

would you have to re-attach the little nub you would saw off though?

btw: cats outta the bag on those cams... they were davidz, sold to jjennings, and that newguy on NECO has jjennings car to do some chrome dipping, he was curious to know about the oil build up from the PCV, couldn't get a hold of jjennings, so did a search and posted on NECO

I'm not sure if you would need it for anything or not... once the backet plates are built, they hold the cam on... I'm not sure what the nub is there for beyond that. I'm cleaning out the garage tonight and plan on busting some cams apart in the process! We shall see!!!

this is getting easier and easier each time... i mean all you would need is to make and market the plates... sell them then the buyer cuts the cams, remove gear, bore it out slightly have plate welded onto shaft (location should be marked before removing gear)... have 3 slits cut into gear and rock and roll...

we could even find someone on these boards to do this for us ala "core" swap + a few bucks

I have an extra set of SVT cams I would be willing to try this out on if anyone has the means of getting it done........

After talking to Terry about even getting new cams built all together, and he said that the Taurus Duratec is limited on beiong able to handle hotter cams, but I think the adjustable cam gears sound like they'd work out well for us. VVT Duratecs are supposed to handle hot cams better than "our" duratecs.....

Yes, I agree, after talking to Terry about the regular Duratec one would think it couldn't handle hotter cams very well. Exhibit A... the pictures above show a regular Duratec with pretty hot cams and adjustable gears that runs very well for a NA 3L... seemed to handle it just fine. Terry... if it's not his way, it's the highway.

If someone has a good machine shop (Utah seems to lack quality shops ) that can handle this.......please speak up! Brad, Rick or Kinger maybe?

I think our shop could handle it, but I would hate to wreck a set of SVT cams if we failed It would also stink to lose the money on a SE set because who would want adjustable cam SE spec cams? Maybe a done up FI set-up.

Next question, call me very stupid but I have never understood adjustable cam gears, what do they do? Besides the obvious of advancing and retarding when the valve open/closed is this just a machanical way of doing something that can be done with a chip? What are we gaining? WHen were assembling the engine couldn't you line up the cams one link off in the direction that is most advantageous? See I'm dumb educate me

I offer PnP Heads for all durtec's details at PnPheads.com or jesse@pnpheads.com for details.

Adjustible SE cams would be good. It could make them run much closer to svt cams.
