I had this exact problem for a long time. Each time the dealer told me that it was a vacuumm leak. BULL@#$#! It had a vacuum leak repaired about 6 times in two and a half years. Once or twice it scared the sh!t out of me on the highway as my car surged in gear. It still does this now only somewhat less and not as often. I have given up on trying to fix the issue.

Yeah, no kidding. If anybody is familiar with Lynch Ford of Chicago, dont go there. Every single time I was thre, I had some terrible service. I was asking them about recalls (i found 16 listed for my car) they gave me a B.S. excuse, laughed at me, and printed out only three of the recalls that i can have done. They lied to my mom on three occasions, and when I told them that I almost died when my car wouldnt stop at a busy red light, the service guy LAUGHED at me. I cant believe this crap. Up until seeing this site, ive always hated Ford. Now I see why, the cars are alright, but service is terrible.

Oh yeah, one of the recalls has to do with a throttle cable defect, maybe thats what the problem is?

I lost the other list of recalls I had, but I found another one for the 96 mystique v6. Im sure if you look around on that website, you will find it for contour as well (they're the same car anyways)
