There is a thing called the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) which opens the secondaries on your 2.5L at around 4k under moderate to heavy throttle. Depending on what you are doing at that point depends on when and how much it opens them.
These things go out after a while which is a pain because your car is all of a sudden slow and inconsistent with it's power. I am in the same boat right now. Mine comes and goes as it pleases and ultimately I am going to have to replace it as you probibly will.
It is located under the 2.5L Duratech black plastic cover on the front of your engine. It is the piece that goes around your oil fill cap and has 3 screws holding down. Take this off and you will see a metal box with 4 philips screws, a plug, and a cable. This is your IMRC. If you would like, take the screws out of it and crack the seal on the lid to take a look to see if maybe your gears are not meshing or the linkage is screwed up. I fiddled with mine and it seems to be working better than before but it doesn't feel like it's opening all of the way now for some reason.
Anyway, check that out and see what you can find out.

I will... just trying to get it to work if I can. Although I love my tour', it's my daily driver and work on it takes the back seat to WA2FAST (Mustang) in a situation like this. The part is like $130+, so that money at the present time is going towards racing, not the daily driver. I just decided to pull it all apart when I spilled some oil under the black cover when I just changed my oil and while I was at it, I decided to crack it open... why not?
I will replace it, just honestly don't feel like it right now.

Question: If you are accelerating on the highway(A/C is not turned on, and I am using the throttle hang fix)and the power output is ok but not great and then all the sudden you feel an extra surge of power - is this the secondaries finally opening up? Should I think about having the injectors cleaned or is it the IMRC that is the problem? I have just over 120,000 miles on her (2.5 MTX). Thanks, Rob PS: I am still getting fantastic mileage on the highway, average 30mpg.

Why are you being a prick about it... I was trying to help you out man. If you don't want me to tell the truth, then don't ask. I wasn't trying to put you down... I love my little contour, why do you think I bought it? I searched long and hard to find this exact car as I did my Mustang. Just because I own a race car doesn't mean that I don't have a passion for this car, just that there is only so much money coming in right now and it's race season... priorities, that's all... damn.

Rob R. To be honest with you, the A/C on our cars are rediculously power robbing units. It's your A/C compressor cycling more than likely. Your IMRC doesn't kick in till around 4k, and it isn't really, really noticible like that till you are alomost at WOT, at which point, your A/C compressor is automaticaly shut down till you get out of WOT. Don't worry about it, that's normal and not your IMRC... the A/C thing kills me... even worse in stop and go traffic with A/C on! Good milage by the way.
