This is the sixth waterpump that I have had to replace since I have owned the car. I have bought several from advanced autoparts and even from autozone. The problem is that they are leaking from where the seal gives away (small hole in the pump). Any ideas as to what causes this problem or if it is just cheap aftermarket pumps? The one I bought from the dealership is twice the price, but it lasted a year and a half. I currently have over 180,000 miles and the car runs fine except for the pumps. Any idea if the thermostat could cause this? Your thoughts on replacement.

A bad thermostat, blockage in the system, or lack of proper bypass can keep the pressure on the pump too high causing early failure. Thermostats are cheap and should be replaced every couple of years anyway. If a previous pump impeller has exploded there can be peices blocking flow.
Of course these will also normally cause temperature problems.
Check alignment of the pulleys if the bearings are out on a pump.
Back-flush the block and radiator keeping an eye on the flow.
Check the plumbing to be sure no hoses have been re-routed or removed and blocked.

I've heard bad things about buying h20 pumps, alternators, a/c compressors, etc. from most parts store. I know personally of people and have seen people on here say they have to replace them over and over (most are remanufactured). Atleast you have a warranty on them though. Buy motorcraft and solve the problem.

Mine is new and not Motorcraft. Bought it from the parts store my bro works at.

yeah i'm sure not all go bad,, but just saying what i've seen. my neighbor went through 2 or 3 ac compressors from a part store in a matter of a month in a truck that he barely drives. A friend went through more starters than I can count in his nissan pickup.

I once had a replacement alternator fail so fast that the cheap parts store actually covered it under warranty (60 days).
As far as I could tell, one of the brushes had never had its bolt tightened, and it just fell apart.

my motorcraft h20 pump came today. looks to be real good quality, just sucks that it cost so much. a small box of parts weighing less than 7lbs cost over $300 after shipping.

Remind me again what all came in that very expensive box, cause I know you didn't just spend $300 on a waterpump
