I think you will like the sound an open K&N will make. I would not consider it an increase in "noise"; I would consider it bringing out the true sounds of the Duratec. It is sooooo nice!!!!! Not annoying at all.

I would suggest "surrounding" the filter with a heat shield and a good search will turn up opinions on that. It will shield from heat as well as from some dirt.
