I'm thinking of installing a K&N air filter or the like, but reading through other posts / mods sections, i notice most people comment on increased induction noise.

Is there a filter on the market that will be as good (or close) to a K&N, without an increase in noise? (I like the way my engine sounds as it is!)

And another question : Do you need a surround to protect the filter, or can it just be free in the engine bay? I understand this may compromise it b/c of heat from the engine.

Thanks

There's a distinction to be made here. Open-element filters like the K&N RU-3530 will definitely change the sound of the intake since you're removing the intake resonator. However, replacing the stock filter with a K&N drop-in shouldn't change the sound much, if at all. You'll get a small horsepower increase, and you won't have to buy new filters; just wash, rinse, and re-oil.

I think you will like the sound an open K&N will make. I would not consider it an increase in "noise"; I would consider it bringing out the true sounds of the Duratec. It is sooooo nice!!!!! Not annoying at all.

I would suggest "surrounding" the filter with a heat shield and a good search will turn up opinions on that. It will shield from heat as well as from some dirt.

Good Luck.

Can anyone give me realistic estimates on what HP difference a drop-in K&N or cone filter with MAF adaptor would make on a Duratec V6? Some of the supposed HP gains i've read about have to be absolute bull. I'm gonna change my intake soon and I need to know which is the better bet for the money.

You could have answered your own question eons ago by doing a little legwork yourself... <ahem - search Nazi>

1. Contradiction - MAF Adapter + K&N drop-in is not an option. The MAF adapter is needed when attaching an open air filter to the MAF. Hence the name. Drop-in is just that. Drop... In...

SVT K&N drop-in = ~2FWHP
Open air K&N conical = ~6FWHP/2FWTQ

2. I'm willing to bet nearly all the claims you have read are bull. I can guarantee it if you mean any from the manufacturer or seller!

I did mean a MAF adaptor and a cone filter, it just so happens that K&N makes a few of those too...
But again, I've seen supposedly unbiased sources give stats that have to be complete bull.

Also, if you haven't "opened up" your exhaust a bit more, you should do that at least. No good if your car can't blow out all the air it sucks in.
