There's a distinction to be made here. Open-element filters like the K&N RU-3530 will definitely change the sound of the intake since you're removing the intake resonator. However, replacing the stock filter with a K&N drop-in shouldn't change the sound much, if at all. You'll get a small horsepower increase, and you won't have to buy new filters; just wash, rinse, and re-oil.
