I have a 98 csvt and i was wondering if there is a six speed that would work on the car or if there is any way i could changes out the gears to have more lower end. Who needs to go 140 anyway. I am curious if other ford cars are enterchangable with mu csvt. If anyone has ideas or knows about the contour tranny's please let me know

There aren't any 6 speeds that are interchangeable with the Contour. You would have to have a custom tranny built if you really want a six speed and money is no object.
Besides, getting rid of your 5 speed and putting in a 6 speed, only means that you'll be spending more time shifting, and less time applying power to the ground. This is not the best way to get a quicker take off, and the Duratec is not a Torque monster, so you will need a lot more than a lower geared tranny to get it moving any faster.

I would say that a 6 speed with close ratios would be a nice touch for road racing...good for keeping out low torque engines in their power band.
Perhaps a SVT focus tranny with a custom bellhousing half would work. Its still not cheap, but it is certainly the most "doable" possibility.

The stock SVT Focus Getrag tranny is not strong enough for the SVT Duratec.

Bigger problem is SVT Focus 6 speed has 2 underdrive ratios instaed of one...basically wiil help highway fuel economy (which SVTF needs) but nothing for power without some ratio changes. IMO MTX-75 ratios well spaced for the 2.5L(unless you really care about 0-60 times where its close ratios require another shift)..Why they put the taller final drive in zetec (fuel economy I guess) is unknown but unfortunate..

The SVT Focus 6-speed is strong enough (same tranny as in the Mini Cooper S and the Works edition w/200hp), but why would you want to do this? You're sounding like you want to spend a bunch of money on a mechanical piece with no functional reason (like going faster) to do so.

contact the Boundrant Driving School, there is a guy there that i have talked to many a times when i thought that i was needing a new trans that told me they sell the custom trans with gears for around 600-800 IIRC. don't quote that price, that's just what i recall. if you need his email, post or PM and i will find it for you, i forget what kind of gears it has but they were set up for road courses.

I don;t think so...see your mesuring everyhting in HP...when transmissions are mostly judge by there torque rating......Though it may be used in the mini cooper s, I to have read stories and have seen the 6 speed get blow (my friends SVT focus). Though it wasn;t power that blew my frineds up but a mis shift....He wanted to go to third but wne into first...it was only a split second in first, and he pushed the clutch back in....at the same time it wasn;t fast enough and hear a "POP" or a "bang" and the tranny went dead. Snapped the diff and it shot through the bottom of the trans.
I ahve misshifted in my MTX 75 before with nothing like this happened (before i did the re-build). Now im not saying this is true for all of them, and this is not directly related to the subject at hand, but because of this situation, i feel that it would be a weaker transmission for our cars than the mtx 75. If you can find some articals on the matter that prove that the 6 speed is reliable in our cars the please by all means show us. If you can't, well you can't. But all my experience comes from seeing directly what happened....and reading about the FSVT.

As ROZ said, trannies are rated in TORQUE not Horsepower.
Second, I don't believe that a Mini Cooper weighs what a Contour does. So the Torque to Weight ratio would be lower in the MC than it would be in the Conotur. This is VERY IMPORTANT if you are calculation on being able to drive the Getrag at a full TORQUE application without exploding your diff.
Torque is what kills your tranny, not Horsepower. Torque = a force that produces or tends to produce rotation or torsion. e.g. An automobile engine delivers torque to the drive shaft.
Horsepower gets what is already moving, moving FASTER. Horsepower = a unit of power equal in the U.S. to 746 watts and nearly equivalent to the English gravitational unit of the same name that equals 550 foot-pounds of work per second.
Just think back to the Kinetic/Potential Energy lessons that we took in school. Torque overcomes Potential, while Horsepower adds to Kinetic.
