I've had a number of structural problems in the last 2 years since adding a 21mm SCA rear sway bar. First the OE mounting points deformed, then cracked. Then I used Stazi's weld-in reinforcement plates to convert to a 2-bolt setup, but these plates' welds then cracked. Then I drove around with no bar for a while

ATI Motorsports (www.atimotorsports.com) fixed the problem right. The fix went like this:

1. Drop rear subframe. In my case we dropped the subframe and knuckles, disconnecting the longitudinal link at the knuckle, but leaving the lateral links connected to the knuckle.

2. Completely remove existing sway bar mounts with a Sawzall. Man, did those things ever look 'optimized' (meaning spindly and weak).

3. Build up new sway bar mounts with 1"-ish C-channel. The C was oriented so when installed in the car, it looks like a U from the back, so the middle leg of the C acts as the face that the bar mounts to. The beautiful thing about this fix is that a single piece of C (about 3" long) can be notched to fit into the existing subframe flange at the front of the subframe, then welded all around. So now I have a strong, stiff mounting point made of a single piece of metal - no need for lots of little scab plates to reinforce the OE mounts. ATI also put in weld nuts on both ends.

4. Reinstall bar and subframe into car. I used Prothane bushings and mounts. I added zirc fittings to ease lubrication.

5. Align. Interestingly, even though the subframe was reinstalled without the proper alignment pins, the initial alignment created by just bolting everything back together turned out pretty good, just a little bit out of toe.

6. Pay ATI $400 for their time (3.5 hrs R&R + 1.5 hrs align at $80 per).

6. Enjoy lift throttle oversteer

ATI was a joy to work with. They had no prior experience with this common Contour problem, but they were enthusiastic to take on a new task. Their shop in Novi, Michigan was beautiful and new. Current projects in there are a 911 getting a new coilover kit, a Mustang getting a new 4.6 2V, a 4.6 4V Focus wagon with an 8.8 rear end(!), a twin turbo C5 racecar, and of course their now-famous 03 Cobra powered Focus with IRS. Drool....

Then they took some measurements and decided that a 4.6 4V and 8.8 rear end could make my car into a rear-drive V8 demon for about $15k. Not my cup of tea...but anyone else?

I have pictures but nowhere to host them. Anyone want to help here?

I'm guessing the true cost would be more than $15k. I know they do the stuff for a living but I don't think their few measurements let them see what else they would have to do.

I know TH quoted me at about $200 for it. However, that would mean driving across the state and probably staying over night at least too. Also taking time off of work.

Maybe it would be cheaper for others now that they have a good idea what to do and could do it quicker.

Not hardly. Terry quoted me $200-250 for the subframe removal, repair and reinstall, and then I'd have to get the durn thing aligned. And I don't trust a $50 alignment, so we're looking at $300+ by the time Terry and a good alignment shop got it all done. Plus HMS is across the state from me, so there's the time off work factor, etc etc.

I mean no disrespect to Terry; I would have gone there months ago if he were a little closer.

Not to mention the service that ATI gave me. When they dropped the subframe, they found that one of my rear brake pads had separated from its backing plate. Since they had most of the assembly apart, they charged me no labor to install new pads. They even went to the Ford dealer to get OE pads for me, at no markup!

Oh, almost forgot to thank some other CEG folks for posting photos of their own repairs... so, thanks, ghodge and bicycle019(?).

I can't wait to see your pics Munson. I'm wondering if ATI's method might be stronger than just boxing in the existing mount point. I guess that in the end it doesn't matter since I doubt I'll be able to break my stuff now.

Woz, thanks for the offer. Check your yahoo email - 5 pics attached.

ghodge, based on your photos, your bar is not going to fall out soon . ATI's approach was a little more simple, which I like, and I think even a little stronger. Hopefully pics will shed some light here.

Which way is better? You know what they say about skinning cats....

Sounds like ATI did what we've done to my subframe. Sawzalled off the old stuff, c-shaped metal notched to clear the lip, full radius weld. Now if that POR15 would get here I could paint it and re-install.

I thinkn $400 is a fair charge as what HMS does is reinforce the stock setup, not eliminate it all together and replace with a much improved fully anchored mount. Not the same job, therefore not the same price.

I'd like to see some pics if possible.

Oh, and rear control arms are next..just finished the "to order" list last night.
