I watched the Motorweek show a couple of nights ago where they did a head to head on the STi and Evolution.

Here is a summary of the test:
There is also an article in the Motortrend Magazine, road and track, etc.

Stats:

Curb weight for both vehicles is identical = 3260 #'s

Horsepower ratings at the crankshaft (NOT the wheels):

WRX STi HP=300 TQ=300 but torque peaks around 4K rpm.
Evolution HP=271 TQ=273

Track times:
WRX STi: 1/4 mile in 13.8@100 MPH; 0-60 = 5.1 sec
Evolution: 1/4 mile in 13.8@101 MPH; 0-60 = 5.0 sec

Ok, there's the matchup. Both AWD. An SVT will probably weigh in about the same weight as these cars, but without the AWD. 0-60 will be hard to beat without good traction and equal or greater power, but could be done.
1/4 mile has already been equaled by wavrdr in his 5psi contour! Great Job! Remember, he has only got 240HP currently! Of course I don't know the altitude he is at versus where they ran the testing at, but that will play a role in the 1/4 times. AND of course there will be variation from car to car, but this gives a decent target value.

So can the SVT beat them? With a well built high-compression 3L hybrid it might be able to run with one and possibly take it, but mostly not. NO stock SVT or N/A 2.5L other than all-out racing engines/cars can do it. A turbo 2.5L should certainly be capable if its tuned well and running decent power.
So I and a few others were pondering what it takes to whip one good. I of course would like to think that my car can do it now.
Look at my basic engine. I have 300HP at the wheels in street trim, 264 TQ! I have as much power to the wheels as a WRX STi has at the crankshaft and my 1/4 mile trapspeed was 102.59 MPH BEFORE I built the transmission and BEFORE I put the intercooler on and only 6 psi.

You do the math, but IMHO in the 1/4 I should be able to easily beat the WRX STi with my currently built motor and trans IF I were a good driver. This means that anyone with a well-worked set of heads on a stock 3L block and a good turbo should be able to drop 300 HP at the wheels. With forged rods, pistons and about 9:1 compression you could have a monster 400+ HP street car that would OWN STi's, modded ones even. I'm expecting to dial in another 30-50 HP at the wheels once I put an ICE tank in the trunk and maybe another pound or two of boost, possible I can do 400HP if I go 10psi. If the rods and pistons hold, the sky's the limit.

Well i would expect no less from either since they are basically rally cars detuned for the street. I really want to see a contour do a 9 second QT though. Cuz i'm betting it wouldn't be that hard to get those(lan evo + STI) to do one.

That's odd.

Motor Trend tested the new "271HP" Evolution at 4.59 & 13.08 @ 105.1mph. That's blazing fast folks! Tested in Arizona at Ford's proving grounds. (I.E. not a cold climate)

The specs for the "300HP" STi were a slightly less impressive 4.87 & 13.23 @ 104.6 mph

Me thinks the old boys at Mitsubishi underated the Evo big time!!! Go Mitsu power...

On the handling front the Evo KILLS the Subie!!! The Evo posted an insane 71.4 mph in the slalom. Yes well over 70mph!!! Better than near any exotic tested!!! (basically it takes a race built car to beat it - I.E. not a street car!)

For reference the new SRT-10 Viper and Z06 posted 70.4mph in the slalom.

Can it stop? How about a mind boggling 106ft from 60 to 0. 1 of only 5 cars that has ever pulled under 300ft from 100 to 0 (294')

The Evo is definitely the real deal.

Now only if the didn't put that ugly front fascia on it. (You think they would have learned something from Subbie's mistake making the WRX look like major ass!) Bring back the old body style!!!

I have driven quite a few z06's on tracks and had the fortune five months ago of takin a Evo for a little spin. I am very impressed with its power and handling. The ride isn't terribly rough either. It certainly out handled the z06 in my opinion. Very impressive car. Should like to see warmongers car in action against one. If only traction weren't in issue . But it certainly is a nice issue to have.

Evo is the real deal! I have seen a stock EVO beat a highly modified late model Mustang GT! The sound of the turbo is INSANE!

All the excitement and numbers makes you want to drive by Ford and throw a brick at the door for not making an AWD or RWD Contour with a bigger front engine bay. RWD Contour with room for a small block ? Oooo...

Demon, you do realize that motortrend alters their numbers based on set values. I mean they correct for elevation, heat, etc. to give more accurate numbers. Otherwise people would read it and when they ran a viper in 120 degree weather on a mountain top then they think their evo or sti could beat it. Also the evo is ugggly so what if it's just a tad bit faster. I don't like the evo's interior either especially the back seat, the front is ok. I would think the STi would like moddifications better and be better quality and LOOK BETTER.

That changes the numbers to a fairly "close" estimation but it does not count the intagibles. Like the fact the IC's are using extremely hot air to cool the intake charge (that's a big factor!) and no matter what correction factors you use you can never equal runs done in ideal conditions and sea level!

I think the Evo in stock form will definitely crack the 12's without a problem with good weather! Corrections factors are okay, but never "exact" They always come up short of the real thing.

Either way 13 flat is blazing fast. Especially for a "rated" 271HP

As for looks. They both suffer from the front end Fuglies! Neither car is very good looking or has very clean lines.
Both cars have econo car interiors as well. The Mitsu's ergonomics is more for the driver while the Subbie's is little more towards cruising.

There is no real winner here. Either car looks infinitely better in it's previous body style.
