Hi all....I just started working on the rims of my 98.5 SE (I have the 8 spoke rims) and I noticed that after I wipe the brake dust away there is a fair amount of rust colored stuff left on the rims....I have tried EVERYTHING I HAVE to get this off....the ONLY thing that comes close to working is wax....it seems to be abrasive enough to take some of it off.....but there is still A LOT left...I KNOW you guys probably have this problem since a lot of you have these rims....what can I use??? Thanks in advance!

Just another thought....I searched for this topic before I asked and found several..but I have tried those...I tried the armor all wipes....won't do ANYTHING for it.....I don't know about simple green... a lot of people say that is corrosive and will wreck clearcoat....I tried Castrol Super Clean and its like water....doesn't help at all....the rims are pretty much gold in color on spots...thanks to the replies so far though!

yeah i had that gold color at the base of the spokes of my factory SVT wheels along with some tar marks and other atrocities. I forgot the name of the product I used but it was one of the spray on/hose off products and it worked amazingly well. The rims looked as good as new when I sold them. Came in a yellow bottle, was around $4.00 and I got it from a place in Michigan called Murrays Discount Auto Parts. I'll get the name when i get home from work. Every Murrays should have it though in case you live by one...

I just used Ajax with water (i.e. a paste) on a cloth around my finger and gently rubbed, worked fine. Next time I will try it with a toothbrush.

i used this stuff called wheel max, if the name is wrong, when i go home ill reply again but im pretty sure its the right name. you DO ONE RIM AT A TIME!!... spray it with the hose then spray the wheel max all over the rim. wait one minute, no longer then rinse wit the hose thoroughly! then dry. it takes off anything! i always have that brake dust on it and it takes it right off. u dont even have to scrub, just wait. youre gonna have to wear sunglasses to look at your clean rims!!

Turtle Wax makes a Wheel cleaner that is safe for Painted Wheels, which our 8 spoke are. They have a clear coat finish. It comes in a bright ORANGE bottle. Just spray it on and rub it around with a soft wheel brush, and then hose it off.
Works wonders.

I have used Simple Green and it has not got that rust coloured stuff off totally.
I am going to try the Ajax idea though. As long as you don't scrub mega hard, it should work. SCC ran an article where a professional detailer said he used it gently, and it was the best product for getting off paint impurities and old wax. But be gentle!
