Of course the seller is gonna say its fine. He's trying to sell it!
Depending on the size of the tear, it won't make a major difference, but remember, speakers were meant to function with the cone and surround sealed. I think if the bass hits hard enough, you may hear a nice popping sound. Normally JL's sell for alot more than that. I just think this guy is trying to get a little money since there is a tear and he knows its practically useless. I would say forget it and get another sub. Do a search. They talk about cheap, yet nice sounding subs all the time in this forum. As far as the box goes, I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I am partial to Q-Logic boxes myself.
