Recently when I start my 80,000-mile '96 Duratec ATX after it's sat for most/all of a day or days, it'll idle just fine for a few seconds, then it'll stumble and if the a/c is on or it's in gear, it'll quit. If I give it gas, it recovers for several seconds, then does it again, for most of a minute or so until it gets some heat. NOTE: Several months ago I did the whole intake manifold gasket/seal fix thing and when I did I cracked the secondaries open as suggested. I don't *think* that's a big contributor to the problem becuase it only cropped up recently. is this a symptom of a bad IAB/IAC/ISC?

I had the EXACT same situation for about 15k miles. In retrospect, they think it might be that the head gasket was leaking just enough to make a plug damp, and then it would dry out with some heat from the engine. (And it only recently decided to give way!) Not 100% sure, but it makes sense. Obviously, there are MANY less sinister possibilities.

I would suspect an IAC problem or a possible leak on the intake somewhere.

Mine was exhibiting similar symptoms and it turned out to be a contaminated MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. If you were using any type of intake cleaning chemical that leaves a residue and this chemical contacted the sensor wire in the MAF, this could be your problem.

I'm only judging from zetec experience here, but I think this could be caused by any of a variety of things that cause a mild or moderate lean condition -- the most likely candidates being, I would guess, either a vacuum leak or a bad or dirty MAF. If it gets worse maybe you'll see a CEL.
