I had the EXACT same situation for about 15k miles. In retrospect, they think it might be that the head gasket was leaking just enough to make a plug damp, and then it would dry out with some heat from the engine. (And it only recently decided to give way!) eek

Not 100% sure, but it makes sense. Obviously, there are MANY less sinister possibilities.
