You are right Bill. I think that is the function of the lockout. To prevent shifts from 5th to reverse. That would be VERY BAD! I would not get rid of mine. The minor inconvenience is a small price to pay for that insurance.

how many other cars without reverse looks have you guys heard of slipping in to reverse from 5th when down shifting?

if you've ever messed around with the shifter without the r-lockout, then you'll see that it is difficult to pop it in reverse from 5th (when the car is off of course). you have to really guide it into reverse. so even if someone is a sloppy shifter, to go from 5th to reverse would still be hard. this is of course how it is on my tranny and my friend's SVT also, not sure about anyone elses. both of ours are chopped shifters also.

it breaks easily, and what kind of person would go from 5th to reverse through the grinding? it's not like going into a forward gear when you are in 5th to reverse, you would have to really push hard

last night I had a dream that my car has no reverse lockout, a homemade short shifter and a silver shift nob...weird huh
