Hey gang,
I've been out of the loop on performance engine parts for better part of a decade now and am just getting back into the game. I keep hearing everyone talking about adding on a "Catback" exhaust. What exactly does "Catback" mean? I've searched the forums and run a Yahoo search and didn't come up with a definition.

It replaces all the exhaust plumbing aft of the main catalytic converter. As in, "from the Cat, back."
Function before fashion.

It's pretty self-explainatory, a cat-back replaces the exhaust from after the catalytic converter to the back.

RogerB and path914,
Thanks for the assist on providing the definition of Catback. I did think that it meant "exhaust system from the catalytic converter all the way to the back" but figured there was the remote possibility that it also meant:
1. Complete exhaust system except for the y-pipe where the stock catalytic converter is replaced with one that creates less back pressure.
2. Complete exhaust system where the catalytic converter is moved further back from the engine.
Item #1 makes sense only because everybody talks about installing a Catback system to increase performance. Reducing backpressure certainly would help performance. I'm pretty sure that item #2 is not smart because if I remember correctly, a certain amount of exhaust heat is necessary for the converter to work properly. Moving the converter further away from the motor would cool it down.

The REAL definition stems from the RPM (Ricer performance manual). The sound that eminates from the feline rectum when it expells excess methane is very similar to that made by the classic "fartcan" muffler that is the defining modification of the Ricemobile. A common misconception is that the "fart" in "fartcan" refers to human flatulance but infact it is feline..hense the name "catback exhaust".
And now you know "the rest of the story".
