You really dont need 6.1 or 7.1 now, unless youre just trying to impress your friends. Theres not a whole lot of support for it right now as far as dvds. 5-10 years down the road, maybe. Plus, prices on 6.1 and 7.1 recievers will only go down as time goes by.

well it also depends on the quality of reciever you have as well (referring to if he should upgrade his 100x5 reciever). Like car audio....not all components are made equal. A 70x5 denon will play cleaner and be more powerful than a 100x5 RCA,sony, pioneer, sherwood, kenwood, aiwa, teak, etc.

In my opinion Denon is the best reciever for the money right now...and with that said I have a harman kardon. But Denon, Harman, Yamaha (the good stuff, not BB), and onkyo (sp?) are all pretty good recievers.

I'll second that. I'm no audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, but I know a solid sounding system when I hear one. I spent close to 2 months listening to Harmon Kardon, Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, and even high-end seperates just to learn a few things from true audio-nazis at "audio boutiques" (where the sell Levinson, Krell, Lamb, etc.).

Dollar for dollar, nothing could beat the Denon 3803 I picked up. It's 7.1 capable, but I'm happy as a pig in sewage with the 5.1 setup I've currently got it tied to. No plans to take things any furhter; at least not right now...

I would have paid more attention to Onkyo (the DS-989 v2 upgradeability really appealed to me), but I've heard a few too many horror stories about their customer service...

Unless the unit starts acting like crap, I'm sold on Denon. There's MUCH more to a system than just the receiver, but for that piece of it, Denon's middle and upper-end products really shine.

Hey...

Don't knock Pioneer.

I own a Pioneer VSX-D709S receiver. This is a 5 x 100W receiver.
When I bought it, this model was the highest model receiver Pioneer made,
without crossing over into their ELITE group of products.
I set it up with the Cambridge Soundworks MovieWorks II 5.1 speaker system,
and I opted for the larger 12" Bass Cube, and the upgraded Center Stage speaker.

I bought the Pioneer Receiver because we ship a lot of receivers across the US for many different events.
We have had many problems with Harmon Kardon, Marantz, Sony, and Denon.
We always shipped stuff in the original cartons, with all of the fillers intact.
None of them lived for more than 3 trips.
The Pioneer lived several years and was always our strongest receiver.
Knowing this, I wanted to buy something that had good quality sound,
several important features, and was built with high quality components and strength.

The Pioneer has lived up to its name, and has always given me good service.

I am also glad that I bought this receiver, because when The WIZ went out of business,
I snatched up a Toshiba SD-9200 DVD-AUDIO player for the unbelievable price of $450.
The least expensive price I could find on the internet was over $1,000 at the time.
In order to get the best DVD-Audio sound from the Toshiba SD-9200,
you need to connect the two components using the discreet Analog connections.
The VSX-D709S has these connections(Multi-Channel INPUT).
I can also program the VSX-D709S to use the Analog INs for the DVD-A and the Optical IN for my DVD Movies.

There are several different reasons why we all buy what we buy.
Saying that one is better than another is up to the individual buyer,
and the intended purpose of his purchase.

I'd agree. I have a D608 ( 100Wx5 ). It's a great receiver and has plenty of clean, crisp power ( especially when pushing to some Klipsch speakers ). Pioneer's quality is among the best. I don't know how you can lump them in with knock-off rebrands. Sony's RS line, isn't TERRIBLE, but for the price, you can get much better. The only thing Kenwood really has to offer is thier Soveriegn line, which only two models are THX certified.

Anywho... Pioneer makes great receivers for the money.

Actually Jason, normal Pioneer stuff is not bad. I have had a Pioneer receiver and DVD player for several years with flawless usage. I will be upgrading soon though when my basement is finished... H/K receiver and Panny DVD are the new performers.

Not necissarily true... Denon is really not "high end" stuff, but it is nice. I would put the Sony ES line above normal Denon merchandise. And it's actually spelled Teac...

Well, I just replaced my Yamaha RXV-795 100x5 with a Harman Kardon AVR-525 70x7. The HK receiver has a much better sound than the Yamaha, even with less power. It also depends on how effecient the speakers are.

As for Denon, I don't like the way they look
