Last week my 96 SE 2.5 died while cruising at about 30 mph. I punched it slighly and the engine died, but restarted immediately after pulling over.
No CEL light either. Hasn't done it since, but my wife doesn't want to drive the car now!

.. and this is a problem? smile

p.s. Seriously, this has happened on several cars of mine and my neighbors over the years; frustrating as it lowers dramatically your faith in car's reliability. Unfortunately almost impossible to diagnose reliably unless it happens on a repeatable basis.

mine stalls out every once in awhile..maybe once a week, starts back up every time..mostly happens in morning on the way to work..i'm getting ready to tune it up,and i just changed the fuel filter, hopefully the tune up might cure it..if not oh well,i won't worry about it unless it happens all the time..

Replace the relay that powers the ignition and FI. It is a brown one in the box under the hood next to the battery. I swapped mine with the horn relay since they are identical to keep the car running. Mine had a mysterous stall and hesitation back when it was under warranty and the dealer couldn't fix it. They replaced the fuel pump, wiring harness, ignition module and it still cut out from time to time. It stalled in my driveway one day, so I trouble shot it with a multimeter and found 4 volts on a 12 volt feed to the FI and ignition, power supplied by this relay. The relay costs 12 bucks; it's a piece of junk too for what it powers. mad Stupid dealer later said my "mods" (SVT intake) caused the problem and refused to work on it after the warranty ran out. I turned them in to a local TV station after I fixed the bug. I demanded the owner call me and apoligize for their accusations; he did. Later, they fired the jerk service manager. I wasn't the only customer he ran off.

Ford Dealer service managers must take a class on "Blame the Customer 101"!.........
I will swap the relays next chance I get. This was the first time this has happened. The car has about 86K on the clock. It runs very well when running. I have taken very good care of the mechanicals. The only thing that is original are the plug wires; I will change them soon also.
This is a very disconcerting problem, especially with no CEL. You don't know if it will start again!
