I have a '96 Automatic, and recently, there's been very obvious and annoying hesitation when cruising on a flat road, or down a hill. The jerkiness almost feels like the sensation you get when you release the gas on a stick shift. It goes away as soon as I give it more gas, or it downshifts, but comes back as soon as I'm back to comfortably cruising. The guys at a shop I brought it to can't figure it out and said that they thought it was in need of a tune-up, but I've already replaced the stock filters (save for fuel filter) and the plugs. Any ideas as to what is causing this (the car's transmission was already replaced at 25K miles)? I am open to anything. confused

V6 or 4 cyl? How many miles? Any CELs? First checks would be the fuel filter, and then plugs and wires. Welcome to CEG!

Also, what speed does this happen at?

I've learned that at a certain speed the transfer case will go in and out of OD or as others have said, in and out of "lock" (where the power is transfered directly to the wheels). I know I don't have the correct termanology but for those of you who know what I'm trying to say, please clarify it for him.

It's a 4cyl Zetec, 61K miles, and the hesitation happens between 50-55 mph. Man, I hope this isn't a norm! Thanks for the welcome, too! cool

i'm having the same promblem to 97 sedan gl 51,000 and its driving me crazy too have the od switch check that what i heard is causing the promblem

Try this,

When you notice it again, turn off the OD.

Does it still happen?

I tried this and it stopped doing it ONLY when the OD was turned off! mad

Hey, guys..


I had a 95LX.... the hesitation sucked..a light "bump" or "shudder" even while cruising.. I couldn't figure it out... Took it to many dealers, and nothing.... Finally.. I changed the plugs (SET THE GAP CORRECTLY) and the wires.... Never missed again..

Sounds about right, as for as what you were experiencing.

I had set my spark correctly and replaced my wires.

One question though, is it true that the wires should overlap each other? I've been told that they should, can't remember exactly why.
