I believe the "special stuff" is a cyanoacrylate. When the mirror on my E-250 fell off after lots of sunlight, that's what Ford used. It fell off again. I mixed up some epoxy and put it on carefully. The mirror is still there after about 8 years. There was and has been no problem.
