Where is the MAF? Is it the sensor in the air filter compartment? I don't have my Haynes' manual handy to check.

The car is back at the Ford dealer for the second time now. They replaced the serp. belt and idler pulley on Wednesday to the tune of $190US, but the sound is still there. Now its up to them to fix the problem at their expense.

The MAF sensor assembly is located between the airbox and the throttle body. It's a metal tubing with a large black square on top, with a connector in the front. The sensor itself (the black portion) cannot be replaced, only the whole assembly can. And it's quite expensive!

After the dealer looked at it a second time, they couldn't hear the noise. I ended up riding around with the mechanic for about 15 minutes when the noise showed up. He listened to the engine at various points and ended up with the conclusion that its some kind of vacuum leak, and it really isn't worth tracking down until I get a CEL.

After spending $350, I can't afford to have more work done if it's not necessary, and the mechanic definitely didn't think it was. For now it'll just have to be an annoying noise smile Thanks to everyone who gave their opinion.

Just so you know, I've had one of those annoying noises that can't really be fixed and/or the mechanics had no idea what it was. I had a sharp piercing screech coming from my LR wheel. They all said it was normal brake pad wear. I drove around with it for about 2 months before I just changed the pads and machined the rotors = noise gone.
