The problem you have there is the belt slipping. Whenever I hit a big puddle at a fairly good rate of speed, I have the same symptoms. Everything connected to the belt stops running. The splash guard must not be adequate. The best way to avoid that trouble is not to hit puddles with your right front wheel to hard, or when it begins to slip, slip the car into neutral and rev it to about 3 or 4 thousand rpms and when you hear it squeal, thats means its catching again. As far as I know, that does not damage your alternator. Hope this helps!
