I just drove to WI and back from CO and before the trip I changed the pump to the NAPA brand metal impellar one. Also replaced the thermostat ($8) as well. I did it because I did not want to get stranded out in Nebraska or Iowa in the middle of the night.
It's an easy job to do- it only took about 1 hour with just a few metric hand tools.
