I need to know the steps to go through to change it. I also cant seem to figure out how to get the big nut loosened, the one that goes to some kink of steel tube towards the firewall. Thanks...... -Nick

This is what I did for my 1996 Contour SE...

- Remove the EVR (aka EGRVR=EGR vacuum regulator) to get at the IAC (intake air control). This is easy to remove since there are only two bolts. I didn't remove the vacuum hoses or electrical connector from the EVR, I just moved it out of the way.
- Remove IAC (intake air control) to get at EGR valve. Once again this is pretty easy to remove, just two bolts. You might want to clean it while it is off (I used electrical parts cleaner) and get a new IAC gasket for installation (they're only a dollar or so).
- I used a large adjustable wrench to loosen the large collar nut (the one that connects to the hose). You don't actually remove this nut, it just slides down that pipe that you saw. The only trick is to make sure that you are loosening and NOT tightening this bolt.
- Remove the vacuum hose and then the two bolts that hold the EGR valve on. You might also want to buy a new gasket for the EGR valve (also a dollar or so) for installation.
- Install the new valve and reverse the above procedure.
- The whole procedure shouldn't take more than an hour if you don't clean the IAC. Add some more time if you are.

I did this from memory, so please forgive me if I forgot something.

Open end wrench required for "big nut", not enough space for adjustable.
Then 2 EGR bolts
Then vacuum hose to EGR.

Note: Do not try and move EGR valve-to-manifold tube, the bottom nut holding it to manifold is quite inaccessible.

I did not see a way to "swing" an open-end wrench without removing other parts. There were too many other things in the way.

That is why exactly why I removed the EVR and IAC... so that I would have room to get a wrench in there and "swing" it around.

But, if you can get a wrench in there and swing it, then have at it... wink

On that big nut, looking at the car from the front, with the wrench standing straight up, do you turn it to the left or the right? Im having trouble budging the darn thing? Thanks

You would go right (i.e., clockwise) to loosen when viewed from front of car. This would be anti-clockwise (i.e., left) when viewed from driver's seat indicating normal (right-handed) threading.

Lean over driver's fender and with both hands on wrench pull firmly towards yourself.

Is the above info all right or do you have any questions left ? smile

horseydug is correct (as usual) on the direction for loosening the large collar nut.

FYI: I found it easier to loosen the large collar nut if I left the EGR attached to the upper intake via the two small bolts. This way you will have more leverage since everything is firmly attached.

Okay, thanks for all the help, im going to give it a try when my engine cools down, now that I have the right size wrench for my car. Home depot didnt have any metric wrench's left so I got a standard one that is close enough to the size wink wink
