well i replaced the stock res with a magnaflow res and replaced the stock mufflers with magnaflow mufflers (got them all from stazi). it sounds great. no rasp at any rpm and gives a real nice throaty note when you get on it. i heard my friends svt with a bassani exhaust, gutted cat and headers and it was very raspy. and i mean VERY. but he just got a highflow cat and magnaflow res from stazi and it sounds great. loud as all hell. it still has a little rasp on the top end but hey, what can you expect with that setup.

NAY I paid $50.00 bucks to have it removed and a straight pipe in place of it. The raspy sound goes away when the exhaust warms up, usually about 10 minutes or so.

No to straight pipe and yes to a Magnaflow resonator.
And any exhaust setup with just the stock resontor is pointless, IMHO. The stock resonator flows about as good as a trying to suck a thickshake though a straw.
If you think you are getting anything but more noise from deleting the rear mufflers and leaving the resonator on there, you're dreaming my friend. Your butt dyno lies to you.
All the mufflkers on the Contour, both SVT and non-SVT are all "turbo" style baffled mufflers, with the resonator being the most restrictive.
Also to add insult to injusry Ford used one resonaotr for EVERY Contour, a 2" diameter unit. So on the SVT the exhaust necks DOWN to 2" from 2.25" to go through the resontor and then back up to 2.25" until it hits the rear y-split where it branches into to 2" pipes that feed into a turbo muffler which has a 25" tip welded onto each one.
My suggestion for the ideal "poor boy" exhaust setup is this:
Keep the stock pipes, swap out the stock resonator for a Magnaflow 4" round Magnapack that is 2.25" for the SVT and 2" for the non-SVT's (or you non-SVT's should upgrade to a used SVT exhaust or all new pipes - 2" is too small for Duratec motors.) The depending on your budget you can swap out the rear mufflers for a Magnaflow straight through muffler, one on either side and add tips. If you have a little more cash, upgrade to Maganflow Race Series Mirror Finish Mufflers on each side (stay away from the single tipped Street Series they have a non-removable restrictor welded into them).
PS stay away from ANY "Turbo" muffler they are ALL baffled and are no better than what's already on the car to start with.
For any enquiries or quotes on replacement Magnaflow mufflers, PM me.

Yes, but it's no lesser an exhaust than the Bassani - yet it costs less and doesn't use louvred mufflers, like Bassani!

I did that with my Zetec, HATED the sound(I also had a resonated tip on it, never again will I buy one of those). When I took it in for inspection they failed it, saying the resonator isn't a real muffler.

Hey Stazi if you have one could you post a link or email me a sound file of your exhaust? I'm getting ready to gut my svt exhaust and add MSDS headers with the ShoShop off road y-pipe (of course I will only drive off road afterwards ) but I'd like to hear what that magnaflow res sounds like also if anyone has a sound file of an svt without the res it would really help me with my decision. My main concern is my exhuast sounding either too loud or sounding like a friggin Honda Civic...neither is the result I'm shooting for.
