Question for the Gurus:
What is the preferred method of cleaning the engine bay? I would like to to do this w/o shorting out the electrical system or flooding the intake/engine.
Also, what products make the rubber/plastic shine best/longest?
Thanks in advance

What I did was take it to a spray do it yourself wash.. spray everything down carefully (use your head on this one.. you wouldn't soak the filter or the coilpack) soaped down the mainfold.. then rinsed.. took the car out of the port.. dried everything off.. took some engine brite foaming degreasor to get all the caked stuff off.. a lot of scrubbing.. then for finishing touches you use silicone tire spray (I use meguiar's black magic) and spray everything down.. your engine will look brand new.

Was your engine running when you did this?
Did you cover any any electronic pieces w/ a towel?

my engine wasn't running.. all I did was cover the open air filter with a plastic bag.. but even that isn't necesary.. overspray isn't going to hurt the intake that much.

i always attach a plastic bag w/a rubberband over the coil pack, and open air filter before i wash out the engine bay...
after all is dry, take a can of tire foam, and spray the whole engine compartment(including the metal parts)let it dry and then just lightly wipe over everything to even it out, everything will shine like new.....but keep in mind dust will attract to it a little easier....

I wouldn't say ALWAYS attach a plastic bag... as long as you don't directly spray it... you should be alright.

For the 2 seconds it takes to do it, I really would advise covering the air filter. This assumes it is an open air element. Why risk an inadvertant soaking? Just my $.02
