They changed the shifter in 98.5 models and up (Again just slightly in 00 models IIRC?)
This is also why the B&M shifter is "said not to fit" the 98 models. Though that can be modified to work.

You are mistaken My friend.The B&M is made to fit the 98 and up as said so right here on the box and on there web site.I have one on my 98 SVT and it fits perfect with no modification.They will not fit the 97 and below.
On A side note B&Ms web site has a shifter for a 00- 1.8 Turbo focus.
