That would be why.
They changed the shifter in 98.5 models and up (Again just slightly in 00 models IIRC?)
This is also why the B&M shifter is "said not to fit" the 98 models. Though that can be modified to work.
What is the measurement on the Cougar piece?
I'll go measure my 00 stock piece and compare it (since it happens to be in a box with the shifter
