Anyway I came to post that it was un unrelated problem and the sounds only had appeared to be coming from where I thought I heard them...
I had the main cat go bad on me... The mechanic at the shop couldn't get the car to start yesterday, but today it started fine when it was cold... he found there was hardly any exhaust pressure. Said it was no charge, so I got him a case of beer, then I unbolted my main cat and saw broken brick material and wire etc come out... drove the car home loudly, removed the cat and gutted the thing... put it back on and all is well now.
The clogged cat explains why the rasp had disappeared from the exhaust... which is now back to it's old raspy self.
Better than a bad chain, huh?
