The check engine light. Ford told me that it is two different colors, yellow for emmissions, red for everything else. Is this true??

Yeah; I need to find out why. The engine feels and sounds great. So I'm not 100% worried just yet. I think something didn't like stop and go traffic. The only way to pull codes is by getting a a reader, correct? We can't have the computer flash the codes via the light?

Yes and yes.
Autozone used to pull codes for free, but no longer in CA.
BTW CEL will flash (not coded) for some faults.

50 bucks down the drain, thanks to Ford. And my extended warranty ended 1,000 miles ago.

What is it with CA!? Did the auto dealers/manufacturers lobby to not allow the freebie testing!? Or do the legislators just think it's not good for car owners to know what's wrong with their vehicles without coughing up $$$ to find out? Or are there legal liability issues? Jeez!!!

I may be able to clear this up a little.
Just like a traffic signal, yellow means caution and red means stop.
Some of the dash lights are yellow for caution and some are red for "this is an emergency, take care of me NOW".
The check engine light (as well as some others) is yellow.
The dash brake warning light (as well as some others) is red.
With that said, there are some older cars (before smog laws dictated a "malfunction indicator light) that had a light that combined engine coolant overheating with low oil pressure. These were also labeled "check engine" lights, and the "check engine" light on these cars are red.
Sometimes explanations about the lights and their colors gets mixed up or lost in the translation.

It's because we have 2x as many people as most states and over 3x the cars. The average family has as many cars as people able to drive, and then add a car.

Heh! sounds like my house, two of us, three vehicles.
I was under the impression that there was a California law making it illegal for a retail outlet to provide the code reading service. I guess I was wrong and it's an AutoZone corporate decision to not do it in CA?

That's exactly it. It was costing them too much man-hours. On a good note, the CEL went away after I filled up the tank. I'm guessing the fuel cap was simply loose or something. No more worries.
