Actually this is not entirely correct. Higher octane gas does not burn hotter. If anything, it burns slightly cooler because the octants that are added to increase the octane rating actually release less energy when burned compared to pure gasoline.

That said, using a higher octane gas will allow you to have a leaner mixture before detonation occurs. And having a leaner mixture will cause combustion temperatures to increase. This is probably what your dad meant.
