This is probably a stupid question but I'm kinda stuck. How do you take the stock shift knob off? ('98 SE) I know that most shift knobs are just threaded, but mine doesn't wanna budge. Is there some secret, or am I just not being "persuasive" enough?

I figured that was it but dang that thing is tight. Anyway, has anyone ever made a custom shift knob? I just finished making one but I'm wondering if it's gonna be a major problem to thread it and to work around the reverse lockout.

I think Elky had one made a while back, don't remember him ever saying much about it though, so I don't know how hard it will be to thread, and your reverse lockout can be romoved, quite easily too.

First off, if you know how to shift, you don't need to worry.
Second, our trannys won't shift from 5th to reverse anyway, I've tried sitting in the driveway. you can row 1-5, but you have to go to N before you can slide back to R.

Now that I managed to get the stock shift knob off, I realized that I can just modify the knob I made. All it takes is a hole that's about an inch in diameter and 3/8" deep. From there, the thing is just threaded. BTW, anyone know exactly what size screw and threads are on the stock shifter?

might not be exact, but 1/2-20 works real good. that's 1/2" diameter, 20 threads per inch. I found a knob from a fork lift that was 1/2-20, and it screwed on okay, and looks kinda interesting! only cost $2.95.

contours, deloreans & fiats, oh my!
