I've riden 250's and 500CC dirt bikes all my life out in the desert, but have NEVER riden a street bike

MOST of my friends and family have bikes, but I've always tried to keep myself from getting one because of all the deaths/injuries contibuted to them by unaware automobile drivers. I've been ani-bikes for soooooo long for myself, I think I should stop fearing them and learn about them. Ranging from new Ducati's and Triumphs to some old school Nortons and Triumphs.....I am starting to love motorcycles!

What direction should I pursue to learn as much as I can on street riding and so on? I want to just show up at one of my friends meets for shock value All in good time though....
Are the DMV courses good enough, or should I look at other sources aswell for good info?

the first time you ride a performance bike you'll fall in love with it.

first bike I rode was a CBR600F.. no license, no helmet, no shirt, no nothing. Pure freedom Me and my buddy were going to buy this bike. I have pictures of it. It was a sunday. And I had just bought the contour saturday. I have pictures of me on the bike and the contour without plates on the background.

We both rode the bike for the whole day. We were all over the place. Everything was ok until my friend fell off the bike on I95. He almost lost his knees. I was driving right behind him and I saw everything. Everything was so fast, I almost went over his head once he was on the floor.. We had to take off, nobody had a license.

I had given up the idea of getting a bike... for exactly 12 months.

I've riden Yamaha 600 and even R1s from friends. Thos are evil.

Once you buy one of those performance bikes you gotta decide who is going to be in control: you or the bike. It may seem easy.. but once you feel the power.. it easily takes over your.

Very good points BBorges. I totally agree. Driver Do Not see bikes. You have to be extremely careful with the good ones, and stay in control.

You will ALWAYS hear stories from people about 'so-n-so got hit' and 'blah got ran off the road' and the such. If you want a crotch rocket, start small and take the MSF courses where you'll learn how to react to those situations. A lot of the accidents you hear about are from people that aren't licensed to ride and don't wear the proper gear.

Believe me, they're a LOT of fun. There's nothing in the world that compares with carving up the twisties on two wheels.

Just go slow learning to ride street bikes...

You damn right.

I thought it was fun in a car, but on a bike, man. I had a perma-grin on my face...

I just need more gear to feel confident so I can push it a little more...
