Today I took my weed eater to the shop to get fixed, and as I was about to leave the owner comes in and askes me "if I drive a little red car." I said "yes." To make a long story short I walk outside to find that my car has rolled down a little incline into a tractor mower. When I look at the front end I see circles of paint are missing. Then I think to myself did I forget to put the E-Brake on, then I look inside and see that the handle is pulled up and when I start the car to get it off the tractor the e-brake light is on, leading me to believe that my e-brake failed. My question is even though my Contour still isn't under warranty do I still have a case to take to the Ford dealership and demand that they give me a new front, bumper painted and all. Thanks

Mine failed on Saturday too. Same deal...rolled down a little hill into a street. Fortuately no damage though.

My parking brake is getting steadily looser, and I assumed it was time for new back brake shoes, but when I got wheel alignment and was all set to pay for brake work, the guy told me the brakes had plenty of life left... this worries me, since I don't have a whole lot of parking brake left now.

I've found on several occasions with my cougar, that the ebrake cable has come off of its clips under the car, which may have something to do with this.. As well as setting the e brake, do you not also leave the car in first gear? This is what I was taught..car shouldn't move if in gear.

The e-brake still works, so I don't think it was the clips, but really you shouldn't have to put it in gear since that's what the e-brake is designed for.

Whenever I drove a stick, I always put it into first gear. That way if the e-brake fail, the car still doesn't move. I think I've also read that you're supposed to turn the wheels toward the curb too so it doesn't roll down the hill... Also notice that you said emergency brake. That's what they really designed it for, emergencies. I don't think they really recommend it as the sole method of parking. Also I'm not too surprised that yours failed. In the first year I had my 95 Contour, they also siezed up and they were replaced under a recall so you can kinda figure out that Ford isn't that great with emergency brakes and not to rely on them too much.

Order from Bill in Vegas, I just got the replacement cables from him for $40, it was about 20% off retail + $5 shipping. I have yet to do the work.

My parking brake cable seems like it is slowly getting stretched too.

Doesn't grip as hard and I have to pull it a couple extra notches now as well.
