The point of this post was to obviously piss people off w/out making as much as a valid argument. Sorry, not here, not now. The 'dead people in Explorers' was very uncalled for.

You bastid; you beat me to it by 90 minutes. Good riddance. Don't forget to ban the IP (if it's static) - I can't see IPs in this forum.

This actually had been pondered for things like taxi cab duty but it was decided that the very heavy 7.3 PSD was too heavy.

Well, they have the new 6L out now
I would imagine over time the extra cost would pay for itself in gas mileage, maintainence and repairs.

Now dont get me wrong im def. not trying to get banded from this great site so moderators please give a po man a break BUT, I read and heard by lots of people that it wasnt firestones fault, but that ford was accualy underinflating the tires so that the explorers would ride nicer. Anyone heard the same? or am i just crazy.

Ford had been toying with smaller V6 versions for the F150 and Expedition and Explorer SUV's but they've pretty much scrapped the project for now.
The older PSD can become a maintenance nightmare if the maintenace schedules aren't STRICTLY adhered to. The new 6.0 hasn't been throwing rods here and there. Still has a few bugs but is improving.

I have a friend who's a CHP officer. He was telling me, not long ago, about an incident he was involved in some time well before I knew him. He was stopped by the side of the road, sitting there in his Crown Vic, when his radar picked up something coming at him from behind at around 90 MPH. The driver of the Camaro/Firebird that slammed into him was killed instantly. I don't know that I ever got any account of how badly my friend was injured in this mishap, but by the time I came to know him, he was certainly recovered from any such injuries, and back at work with the CHP. Obviously, he came out better than the driver of the other car; this is probably due, in large part, to how sturdy the Crown Vic is.

um if that's the case, its the owners fault for not checking their own tire pressure...i mean geez who doesn't check their tire pressure at least occasionally.....and if a slightly underinflated(because i'm sure anyone would notice a very underinflated)tire, destroys itself that badly, then i'd have to blame it on the tire...

from what jared told me (we talk a lot on AIM as he likes to say my car is gonna die and I say his car is slow and ugly): ford used tires from rangers as the explorer was based on ranger and didn't say to up the tire pressure even though vehicles is heavier. this resulted in low weight carrying of explorers (like they can't haul as much stuff as a taurus or something). and it also caused rollovers maybe. i still think it's goes like this in terms of faultiness: 1.owner of vehicle 2.firestone 3.ford 4.hillary clinton

So what, this guy is the foremost expert on Explorer rollovers and tire delamination? How about you go eduate yourself with repuatable sources (all the info in on the net somewhere) and then let us know what you found.
For the record: Ford gave Firestone a tire specification (and it didn't say "give us Ranger tires"). Firestone supplied the Wilderness A/T. The tires weren't correct for the application (and may or may not have really met the spirit and/or letter of the specification - at that level, suppliers self-certify to Ford's spec). Firestone should have supplied a more appropriate tire. Ford should have done better on vehicle testing, and allowed for more "factor of safety" when it came to tires being run low on presure in the application. Low pressure is probably about a 5 or 6 in Occurrence in a Failure Modes Effects and Analysis (given the customer base), and tire delamination is certainly a 10 in Severity - that combination is unacceptable. Both are at fault IMHO (although neither will admit it).
