First, of all, I am sorry for the family of the officer.
While it is a reasonable argument that no vehicle would withstand such a collision, it is not a new development that the vehicles explode when hit. It is KNOWN that the vehicles, due to their usage, have to sit on the shoulder numerous times per day, thus greatly increasing the risk of collision.
Therefore, it isn't unreasonable to expect the manufacturer to take steps to minimize the risk of puncture / fire in the event of a collision.
The PI Crown Vics have uprated cooling systems etc. due to their unique usage. Why is it so difficult to direct engineering resources to alleviate/minimize the fire risk in the event of a rear end collision for these cars ??
I am not trying to flame Ford, just trying to understand the issue.
