CEL on, took to Ford dealer and was charged 2.5 hrs labor to diagnose and replace 02 sensor. Parts, labor, tax and misc came to $373.34. Ford svc mgr said most of labor was to get code and troubleshoot to make sure it was an 02 sensor, which one it was and make sure it was not DPFE. Does this all sound right? Seems like a common problem and easy diagnosis.

CEL codes for the O2 sensors are specific. Although it does not have to be an O2 causing the problem, there is no question which one gives the wrong reading. The DPFE will give seperate fault codes. It will not cause an O2 code unless there is a DPFE code too.

Last word, sounds like a line to add more labor time.

took me less than 5 minutes to get code pulled. ~$50 for sensor and $20 for loan-a-tool, money which i got back. inexperienced, took me less than half an hour with hot engine to do. easily a 20 minute job,,, but you have duratec, which sensor was it, as some on duratec are hard to get to. but still , that's too much but doesn't everyone know by now to not go to ford to have work done?

Most reasonably competent mechanics would probably be ashamed to say it took them more than an hour to find and replace an O2 sensor that was throwing a code. A dealer should have superior tools and training, to make the job even faster. As was mentioned, there are specific codes for the O2 sensors and it only takes about 2 minutes to read the codes. God only know what they were doing for the other 2 hours and 48 minutes, but it sure doesn't take that long to change any sensor on a contour.

seems steep to me too. the computer tells you exactly which o2 sensor is off. when mine was screwey it took me and my dad about 2 hours to do it and we had no idea what we were doing. 2 1/2 hours, and they're a dealer? sounds fishy.

now officially a troll, i guess. used to have a black 96 SE, until it broke down one too many times. now I'm hunting for a motorycle.

I'm pretty sure the svc advisor told me they pulled code 1151 however, I can clearly see that the 02 sensor behind the radiator was replaced which seems easily accessible.

P1151 points directly to that sensor, no question.
