I have been experiencing the Alt light on under heavy acceleration. Being the cheap SOB I am. I have purchased a voltage regulator and new brushes with the holder from NAPPA for a total delivered price of $66.00 and change. Now my question. Since these babies are so fun to get off, would it be easier to rebuild it still on the car, i.e. half on, half off???

I'm for bang-for the_buck also, However if it is even possible now days without special tools, rebuilding as you say would make building a ship inside a bottle easier than passing gas.
I haven't had a alternator split apart for years and something I read somewhere (I think it's a real bear)
Wish my "fogetter" didn't work so good?
The way they engineer parts nowdays trying to control cost, the alternator is on the ragged edge. I haven't heard anyone comment what sorta failures they are seeing. The diodes are always suspect besides the brush bounce???
Also I would love the hear the reasonsing behind putting the 175 amp fuse between the alternator and battery?
I know I find off-beat things to wonder about?
All part of been there done that getting older.

take it off and bring it inside on a work bench. You will save your sanity and if the little parts inside decide to jump when you open it up, you will ony have to look on the bench and not all through the dark and dirty motor.

Before you do the job, check the pulley to see if it has somethin on it that might cause the belt to slip.

Maybe you need a new serp belt, instead.
