The ding guard is not meant to protect your car. It is meant to protect other people's car from you when you open your door.

When other people open their doors, they will hit on roughly the same level as your side mirrors, where your door kinda bulges out.

The problem has only exasberated as the prevalence of SUVs have grown, with even higher doors -- the bottoms of which are clear above your ding guards.
