Like, squirt some gas into the air and see if it comes out in a good even spray.

My question is, if they do need cleaning, do I really need to pay a garage, or is there some reasonable approach I could use? Haynes says I should not mess with injectors at home... Is it safe to just open them up and use chemtool, or would I never get them back together right?
I was getting a CEL that said my 2.0 L was lean (bank one) The garage first replaced my O2 sensor, car ran better but the light came back on.
I took it back to the garage, a different tech looked at it. He said my MAF sensor was reporting low O2 , like the car was in Colorado. He cleaned up the MAF and now the car runs great. Before it was sluggish from a stop and gas suffered, also I noticed when I had the problem that at highway speeds, RPM's were higher than usual - Hope that helps

I already cleaned my MAF several months ago by soaking it in brake cleaner (non-chlorinated). It seemed to help a bit, but it didn't cure the main problem.

Anyway, as for the injectors, I pulled them out and watched them squirt while cranking the engine, and as far as I could see they are all perfectly unclogged.

I also replaced my oxygen sensors and that didn't help either. The old ones had been exposed to some silicone so it might have been worthwhile to replace them anyway... maybe.
