I need tires soon and I went out today to get a few quotes. I need a performance all season tire for use in some snow, as I will be away at college for most of the winter. I have E1 rims. So which would be best for me? (open to suggestions also)
Firestone Firehawk GTA-02 215/50/R16 Total Price (tax, balance, everything) 471.80
BFG Comp T/A 215/50-16 Total Price 473.09
Thanks ahead of time.

Do not under any circumstances buy the firestones. I have firehawk GTAs on my car and they are the worst tires I've evr seen. Even when they were new they wouldn't go a lick on the snow. In fact, one day I went to go around a gentle curve in the road at about five miles an hour. There was a quarter inch of snow an the ground, and my tires had no grip (yes they were new), anyway, I slid off the road and was within two inches of hitting a fire hydrant. This little "incident" also caused me to chew up my rim. If you want traction on snow stay away from anything with firestone on it. BTW, the firehawk's are about to go bald, and I have 23K on the car. I don't drive aggressively, and I had them rotated. IMHO, they are junk. Pick anything else that isn't an all out summer tire, and you'll be happier than you would be with the firestones.

I just got the Continental ExtremeContact on my new wheels. Luke at the Tire Rack suggested them to me. They don't come in 215/50/16 but several people on here go with 225/50/16 on their E1's.

I ran BFG comp TA 215/50-16 all this past winter and felt they did a very good job. They're also pretty good in the rain. I would recommend these to anyone. I got mine at discount tire for a great price, and have loved their service ever since.
BTW, I have not heard anything good about Firestones. You might want to look at michilen too.

Whoa. If you were a Ford Explorer owner, I'd believe you. But the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP is a superb tire.
Zip on over to tirerack.com and see for yourself. One of the top ultra-high performance tires, year after year.
You may be thinking about the Firehawk GTA or SVX. Nothing good is ever said about those tires.

Thanks for the advice, I did check out tirerack.com and decided against the firestones. I went up to NTB to get a quote on the BFG Comps and they quoted 598, which is high compared to what I could get at Discount. I havent decided for sure yet but I am going to go with the BFG Comp T/A or the BFG KWDS in 215/50/16 or 225/45/16 (If i go 225 I need to go 45 then also so my speedo is not off right? )

Maybe I am thinking about those tires, but like I said, I have not heard anything good about firestones, which includes several people I know who have them. But now I have heard something good from you, specifically the SZ50's. Thanks, I'll stick to my Bridgestone S03 pole position in the summer.
As for the sizing issue, here's a cool site that calculates tire size for comparison http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

In both cases you are considering ALL SEASON high performance tires. These tires definitely don't match with the OEM BFG KDW g-force or the Firehawk SZ50 EP which are ULTRA high performance SUMMER tires.
Anyway, the BFG Comp T/A are superior to the Firehawk GTA. Personally, I won't put either of them on my SVT!
